Use a doorbell with your Google Nest or Home device

With a supported doorbell and a Google Nest or Home speaker or display, Google Assistant can announce when someone’s at your door. You can also stream your video doorbell on your display or your TV using Chromecast.

This feature is only available in the US, UK and Canada.

What you need

For Google Nest displays

  • A connected doorbell
  • A Google Nest display

For Google Nest speakers

  • A connected doorbell
  • A Chromecast or TV with Chromecast built-in
  • A Google Home, Google Nest Mini (2nd gen), Google Home Mini (1st gen), Google Home Max, or Google Nest Audio

Know when someone’s at your door

Google Assistant will tell you when someone rings your doorbell.

Step 1. Set up your doorbell

If you haven’t already, set up your doorbell by following the steps provided by the device maker.

Step 2. Connect your doorbell to your speaker or display

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. At the top left, tap Add   Set up device  Works with Google.
  3. Search or scroll down the list of Works with Google partners and tap your doorbell manufacturer.
  4. Log in to your account and follow the steps on your mobile device to begin pairing.
  5. Scan over and understand the terms, then tap Allow to enable Google Assistant to link with the account.
  6. When the pairing is complete, tap Done.

Note: If you’ve already set up a doorbell, you may have to say “Hey Google, sync my devices” for your doorbell(s) to appear.

Step 3. Set a name for your doorbell

You can choose names to call your doorbell.

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap your doorbell.
  3. At the top right, tap Settings .
  4. Under “General settings,” tap Name and then Enter a name and then Save.

Step 4. Assign doorbells to a room

To control your doorbells more easily, assign them to a room.

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap your doorbell.
  3. At the top right, tap Settings .
  4. Under “General settings,” tap Room.
  5. From here you can either:
    • Select a room.
    • Add a new room: Scroll down, then tap Add a custom room and then enter a room name.
  6. At the top right, tap Save.

You can check for new doorbells that haven’t been assigned to a room.

Using your voice

To do this: Say “Hey Google” or “Ok Google,” then:
Sync all devices “Sync my devices”
Sync a device type “Sync my lights”

Important:

  • You must have already set up your devices in the partner app (Step 1 above).
  • If you’ll sync multiple devices at once, you may receive a timeout error.

(For Nest displays) Step 5. Enable Personal results and Home screen and notifications

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap your display.
  3. At the top right corner, tap Settings  and then Recognition & sharing and then Recognition & Personalization.
  4. To turn on notifications, first turn on Allow personal results.
  5. Scroll down, then choose how you want your personal results to appear.
  6. To turn on notifications, tap Always show proactively. If you want to turn off notifications, tap Never show proactively.

Stream your video doorbell camera

On your Google Nest display

Step 1. Complete set up steps 1-5 above

Step 2. Use voice commands to stream your video doorbell to your display

To do this:

Say “Ok Google” or Hey Google,” then:

Start stream

“What’s on <doorbell name>?”
“Show the <doorbell name>”
“Show the <doorbell name> on <Nest display name>”

Stop stream

“Stop”

Communicate through your Nest Hello with your display

When your display prompts you that someone rings your Nest Hello doorbell, tap Talk to begin a conversation with them. When you’re finished to talk, tap Done to end the conversation.

 On your Chromecast-connected TV with a speaker

Step 1. Complete set up steps 1-4 above

Step 2. Set up Chromecast

Set up Chromecast. If you’ve already set up Chromecast, skip this step.

Step 3. Link your TV to your speaker or display

If you’ve already linked your TV to your device, skip this step.

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi or linked to the same account as your Chromecast, or speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. At the top left, tap Add   Set up device plus  New device .
  4. Tap the home you want to add the device to  Next.
  5. Tap the device you want to set up  Next.
  6. Make sure that the code shown on the TV matches the code shown on your mobile device.
  7. To send anonymous data that helps us improve devices, tap Yes, I’m in. To opt out, tap No thanks.
  8. Tap the room where you’re setting your device up  Next.
  9. Tap the Wi-Fi network you want to connect your device to  Next.
  10. Tap Next.
  11. To choose whether to receive emails about your device, tap Sign up or No thanks.
  12. Choose which video services you want to add  Next.
  13. Tap Continue  Continue.

Step 4. Use voice commands to stream your video doorbell to your TV

To do this: Say “Ok Google” or “Hey Google,” then:
Start stream “What’s on <doorbell name>?”
“Show the <doorbell name>”
“Show the <doorbell name> on <chromecast name>”
Stop stream “Stop”

You can turn off Assistant notifications from the Google Home app.

You can also use Do Not Disturb to temporarily turn off visitor announcements for your Google speaker or display.
